Welder/Fitter

Saskarc is seeking a Welder/Fitter, who must be able to take a blueprint, fabricate the required weldment and weld with the appropriate welding processes until the welding and fitting portion of the project is complete.

Job duties:

  • Read and interpret technical drawings & blueprints.
  • Accurately lay out the work piece for fitting of components, drilling or punching of holes, bending of plates and material edge preparation. (Chamfer, Bevel, Flame Cut)
  • Prepare the surface of material for welding by use of hand or power tools.
  • Operate cutting torch (Oxy-fuel or plasma arc) safely and accurately.
  • Prepare weld joint configurations within tolerance.
  • Adjust the welding machine to the proper parameters given by the WPDS and perform quality welding to the applicable standard. (CWB, ASME, API)
  • Perform the first level of quality control by inspecting the accuracy and quality of his/her work performed.
  • Inform his/her Fabrication Supervisor(s) when the work is ready for the next level of inspection.
  • Create jigs or templates in order to replicate accurate components and increase productivity.
  • Maintain safe work practices.
  • Required to submit one (1) completed Weekly Hazard Identification, to support the company’s safety culture
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Participate in daily shop clean up at shift’s end.
  • Perform other assigned work as required.
  • Ensure traveler and welders log are accurately filled out.

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in welding of heavy plate and structural components.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, with a college or university degree preferred, or an acceptable combination of education and relevant experience.
  • CWB and applicable in-house welder qualifications.
  • Stainless steel experience is an asset.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand how the various views work together.
  • Must have an understanding of weld symbols and information tracking systems such as part identification and weld maps.
  • Developed capacity to determine the most sensible sequence of fitting to prevent unnecessary steps.
  • Good working knowledge of welding processes, metallurgy, and related products.
  • Understanding of metal deformation and how to control warping and distortion of the work piece.
  • Knowledge of heat shaping procedures to correct metal distortion after fabrication.
  • Understanding of basic mathematics and geometrics.
  • Good communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Overhead Bridge Crane (OBC) ticket and/or proof of minimum 1year experience
  • Forklift ticket and/or proof of minimum 1 year experience

Work conditions

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift weights up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
